Ada Lovelace was Lord Byron’s daughter and Charles Babbage’s protégée, born in London in 1815, and she wrote what’s recognized today as the first computer algorithm at a time when Victorian society held that women were incapable of such reasoning. The Coppola family named a gin for her. Great Women Spirits is the Francis Ford Coppola Winery’s spirits line honoring remarkable women in history, and this gin pays homage to the English-style gins of Lovelace’s era while turning them unmistakably Californian: a “Code of 10 Botanicals” — Italian juniper, lavender, rose petals, lemon peel, orris root, ginger, and Meyer citrus among them — some grown on the Coppola estates in Napa and Sonoma, distilled in a custom copper pot still using both maceration and vapor-basket extraction, and proofed with spring water from the family’s Inglenook estate in Rutherford, bottled at 40% ABV. It was designed explicitly for a Dry Martini. The Gin Is In found a bright, vivid nose of lavender simmering into rose and green leaves — distinctly contemporary despite the London Dry inspiration — and called it mission accomplished: lovely juniper, ginger, and citrus, an excellent mouthfeel, and botanicals that complement dry vermouth without clashing, with rose showing in a Last Word and ginger in a Negroni. Expect Turkish delight sweetness mid-palate and a candied ginger finish over an earthy base. Full-bodied, floral, and a genuinely charming Martini gin from wine country.
