Akkeshi Hakuro Glistening White Dew Peated Single Malt Japanese Whisky is the twelfth release in the 24 Sekki series from Akkeshi Distillery in eastern Hokkaido, a coastal distillery founded in 2016 to make Islay-style whisky in Japan’s far north. Each Sekki release marks one of the 24 micro-seasons of the traditional Japanese calendar; Hakuro is the turn from summer to early autumn, when dew glistens on the silver grass.
Distilled from 100% peated malted barley in Forsyth copper stills and matured a minimum of three years in ex-bourbon, red wine, ex-sherry and Hokkaido mizunara oak casks, it is bottled at 55% ABV. The nose shows sandalwood, honeyed pastry cream and fresh bread with a subtle peat edge. The palate is persimmon, bittersweet chocolate, black tea and incense-tinged smoke, finishing clean and crisp with white pepper and citrus peel.
