Stranger & Stranger is one of the most talked-about Compass Box limited editions, a collaboration with the London design studio that has created the blender’s packaging for more than thirty projects. For once, John Glaser let the designers do as they pleased with the bottle, and gave them an equally unconventional liquid to package.
The recipe combines mature malt and grain Scotch whiskies with a small proportion of one-year-old grain spirit that had been used to season experimental new American oak barrels, a “sacrificial spirit” that turned out to be packed with wood spice and exotic vanilla. Because that component is under three years old, the whole bottling cannot legally be called Scotch whisky, which only added to its cult status. Bottled at 92 proof, non-chill-filtered and naturally colored, it is rich, spicy and vanilla-laden. A rare collector’s bottle.
