Cream of Kentucky is one of bourbon’s old names brought back by one of its most respected distillers. The brand was introduced in 1888 by I. Trager & Co. of Cincinnati, revived by Schenley in 1934 after Prohibition, when its Norman Rockwell advertising artwork made it a household name through the 1930s and ’40s, and it had disappeared from shelves by the 1980s. Jim Rutledge, the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Famer who spent 21 years as master distiller at Four Roses, acquired the name after retiring in 2015 and relaunched it under his J.W. Rutledge Distillery in Oldham County, Kentucky. For the revival he bought a limited supply of long-aged Kentucky straight bourbon he considered worthy of the label, reportedly barrels of more than eleven years from the Barton distillery in Bardstown. The first release came out at 11.5 years in 2019, with bottlings rationed out in small quarterly lots across a handful of states. This bottling carries a 12.3-year age statement. A collector’s bourbon and a direct link to a pre-Prohibition Kentucky brand, handled by a distiller whose name carries real weight.
