E. Cuarenta is the tequila of Earl Stevens, better known as E-40, the Vallejo, California rapper whose name the brand simply translates into Spanish. He announced the line in early 2018 with a blanco, a reposado and this añejo, after, in his words, years of trips to different distillers in Mexico working with master blenders to find the right product and taste profile. By then he was already in the drinks business with his Earl Stevens Selections wines and the Sluricane rum cocktail. The tequila is made from 100% blue Weber agave at NOM 1438 in the Los Valles region of Jalisco, the lowlands around the town of Tequila. As an añejo, it’s aged in oak barrels for at least a year before being bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof). The producer describes it as an elegant sipper with rich agave and wood character, a rich amber color and a medium body, and reviewers on Tequila Matchmaker pick up oak, caramel and citrus across the range.
