Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Barrel Proof Rye Whiskey is the thirteenth release in Buffalo Trace’s E.H. Taylor collection and the first rye in the line to be bottled uncut and unfiltered, straight from the barrel at 126 proof. Named for the 19th-century distiller who championed the Bottled-in-Bond Act and built what is now Buffalo Trace Distillery, the Taylor line is one of the most collected in American whiskey, and this limited-edition rye disappeared from shelves almost immediately.
VinePair scored it 94 out of 100, describing cracked peppercorn, dill, rosemary, orange oil and honey on the nose with a hint of pumpernickel, then spiced peach cobbler, red apple and black tea on the palate before honeycomb and cherry candy take over. The finish is syrupy with barrel char, minerality and a savory maple-bacon note. The reviewer concluded it hits strong marks across the board. It uses Buffalo Trace’s high-rye mash bill, the same family as the standard E.H. Taylor Straight Rye, but at full barrel strength the depth is on another level.
