Fee Brothers Mint Bitters are made by the Fee family of Rochester, New York, a business that started with an 1840s butcher shop and a wine and liquor store opened in 1864 (the label reads 1863, a date a grandfather preferred because it fit his limerick). The family kept going through Prohibition with cordial syrups and altar wine, moved into cocktail mixers in the 1950s, and is now led by the fourth generation, Joe and Ellen Fee. Mint and peach were added to the bitters range in the early 1990s. Unlike most Fee bitters, which sit on a low-alcohol glycerin base, the mint is an extract-style formula of natural peppermint flavor (propylene glycol, alcohol, water, glycerin and peppermint oil), bottled at 35.8% ABV according to Difford’s Guide, with the vivid green color coming from added food coloring. The point is concentrated peppermint in a dash: a quick way to put mint into a Julep, a Mojito, a Stinger, a whiskey and soda or a chocolate-leaning dessert drink when there is no fresh mint on hand. Sold in the 5 oz bottle with a dash-dispensing top.
