Fee Brothers Plum Bitters are part of the expanded bitters range from the Fee family of Rochester, New York, a business that began with an 1840s butcher shop and a wine and liquor store opened in 1864 (1863 on the label, because a grandfather preferred it for his limerick). The Fees got through Prohibition making cordial syrups and altar wine, switched to cocktail mixers in the 1950s, and are now in their fourth generation under Joe and Ellen Fee. The producer describes this one as a fruity blend of plum and spices reminiscent of British plum pudding. It is glycerin-based, made from water, glycerin, natural plum flavor and other natural extracts, and Difford’s Guide lists it at 12% ABV. In its review Difford’s found a slightly hazy golden amber color, a pungent plum and cinnamon nose, and a bittersweet ripe-plum palate with herbal spice, cinnamon leading, sweeter than a traditional aromatic bitters and closer to a plum-flavored bitter liqueur. Use it where warm spice fits: a rye Manhattan, a bourbon Old Fashioned, brandy cocktails, a whisky highball or a fall sangria. Sold in the 5 oz dasher-top bottle.
