Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Rye Whiskey is the premium version of Jack’s rye, drawn one barrel at a time from the upper floors of the Lynchburg, Tennessee barrelhouses and bottled at 94 proof. Like all Jack Daniel’s rye it uses a 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley mash bill, cave-spring water and the sugar-maple charcoal mellowing that defines Tennessee whiskey, which is why it drinks smoother and fruitier than most ryes at this proof.
Breaking Bourbon described a welcoming nose of cherry and banana with custard, oak and faint rye spice, banana up front on the palate followed by caramel and cherry with a standout buttery mouthfeel, and a medium finish of cinnamon and vanilla, calling it a unique, buttery rye already showing signs of greatness. The Jack Daniel’s fruit character is unmistakable, and it makes a big, bold rye that does not overpower, in the brand’s words. Each bottle is labeled with its barrel number, rick and bottling date.
