Laphroaig Aged 10 Years Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 40% Age: 10 Years Old Country: Scotland
The Whisky
Laphroaig 10 Year Old is the definitive, uncompromised benchmark for medicinal Islay malt, globally revered as one of Scotland’s most distinctive and polarising single malts. This iconic expression is distilled today exactly as it was when created by Ian Hunter over 75 years ago, serving as the foundational heart of the distillery’s lineup. Fully matured for a decade in deeply charred, first-fill American oak ex-bourbon barrels sourced directly from Maker’s Mark, the spirit pulls out beautiful layers of smooth vanilla cream to counter its intense coastal profile. Bottled at an approachable 40.0% ABV, this heavy hitter represents the ultimate rite of passage for peat lovers, delivering a bold, unapologetic, and fiercely traditional dram that speaks entirely of its rugged island home.
Our Tasting Notes
The nose is an absolute powerhouse of classical Islay character, opening with an intense blast of heavy peat smoke, medicinal iodine, and sea salt, closely followed by smoky bacon, damp seaweed, and a surprisingly delicate undercurrent of vanilla-scented honey. On the palate, the whisky has a wonderfully greasy, mouth-coating texture that delivers an immediate explosion of savory and sweet contrast. Pungent flavours of wood ash, liquid charcoal, and first-aid plasters dominate the entry, which then seamlessly give way to sweeter notes of malted biscuits, vanilla ice cream, and cardamon spice. The finish is remarkably long, drying, and atmospheric, leaving behind a persistent trail of smouldering campfire ash, tarry ropes, and a final, sweet seaweed afterglow that lingers on the palate for ages.
The Team & Traditions
The fierce consistency and uncompromising style of this flagship 10-year-old are maintained by Laphroaig’s dedicated distillery team on Islay. Standing as one of the few remaining distilleries that stubbornly clings to traditional, labor-intensive methods, the team continues to operate their own historic floor maltings to hand-turn a portion of their barley. The distillers specifically smoke their damp germinating malt at very low temperatures over slow-burning peat kilns for up to 17 hours, allowing the grain to absorb an exceptionally high concentration of medicinal phenols and aromatic compounds, ensuring that the legendary house character remains unaltered from batch to batch.
