Los Vecinos del Campo, “neighbors of the field,” is a collaboration between the Sazerac Company and Casa San Matías, the historic tequila house led by Carmen Villarreal, working with a group of 10 mezcalero families in the Valles Centrales of Oaxaca (NOM O96X). The name honors those families and the communities behind each batch. The agave is hand-harvested and slow-roasted underground, which gives the mezcal its smoke, then crushed with traditional stone equipment, naturally fermented in wooden vessels, and double distilled in small batches in copper pot stills. The Espadín was the brand’s first release, launched in December 2018, and it is made entirely from maguey Espadín, the most widely planted agave in Oaxaca. It’s bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV). The producer describes a mezcal that opens with spice before moving into roasted tropical fruit, young ginger and green bell pepper, built to be versatile enough for cocktails and still worth sipping neat. That balance is the point: the smoke is present without taking over, which makes it a natural choice for a mezcal margarita, a Oaxaca Old Fashioned or a mezcal Paloma, or poured neat into a copita with orange slices.
