Nassif Family Reserve American Whiskey is the entry-level bottle from Obtainium, the Cat’s Eye Distillery label out of Bettendorf, Iowa that made its name bottling ultra-aged sourced whiskeys. Co-founder Gene Nassif originally blended it to serve family and friends at his own wedding, and it was so well liked that he made it a permanent release. It is bottled at 107 proof.
The blend is unusual and transparent: 50% fourteen-year-old light whiskey from MGP in Indiana, and 50% of a three-year, ten-month bourye, a mash-up of 36% rye bourbon and 95% rye distillate aged together in new oak. The old light whiskey brings honeyed, buttery sweetness and the young bourye brings rye spice and fresh oak, and the result is a whiskey that is approachable for a novice, works beautifully in cocktails and still has enough going on to be enjoyed neat by an enthusiast.
