Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey is the last surviving name from Maryland’s once-booming rye industry, first produced near Baltimore in the 1890s, shuttered by Prohibition, revived afterward as the final Maryland rye standing, and now kept alive by Heaven Hill in Kentucky. This is the premium version: a six-year-old straight rye bottled at 110 proof, drawn from extra-aged barrels in prime warehouse locations at Heaven Hill’s Bernheim Distillery in Louisville.
It shares its mash bill of 51% rye, 39% corn and 10% malted barley with Rittenhouse, but the extra age and proof make it a different animal. Breaking Bourbon rated it 3.5 out of 5 and called it one of the best everyday ryes on the shelf, with cherry syrup, rye spice, red licorice and cinnamon apple on the nose, cherry cola, rye spice, vanilla and summer fruit on the palate, and a finish of rye spice, vanilla and cherry with gentle oak, noting it drinks smoother than its proof suggests. It won Whisky Advocate’s Whisky of the Year in 2015 and remains a bartender favorite for a Sazerac.
