Pōkeno Exploration Series No. 01 Totara Cask is a world first from Pōkeno Whisky Company in New Zealand’s Waikato region: single malt matured in casks made from tōtara, a native New Zealand tree revered by Māori and prized for its rot-resistant timber. No other distillery had aged whisky in tōtara before, which makes this the most distinctly Kiwi whisky ever bottled. It is bottled at 46% ABV (92 proof), non chill-filtered, in a 700ml bottle.
The whisky is bright gold with a nose of native florals, honey, orchard fruit and vanilla. The palate is smooth and velvety with apple and pear, caramel and a gentle spice, and the tōtara wood adds a resinous, aromatic complexity that no oak can replicate. The finish is long with toffee, spice and a whisper of that unusual wood. A genuine collector’s piece and a fascinating dram for world-whisky explorers.
