Rihaku “Wandering Poet” is the flagship Junmai Ginjo from Rihaku Shuzo in Shimane Prefecture, on Japan’s rural Sea of Japan coast. The brewery takes its name from Li Bai, the Tang-dynasty poet known in Japan as Rihaku, who wandered China writing verses and drinking wine, and Wandering Poet is a tribute to him.
It is brewed from Yamada Nishiki rice polished to 55% with no added alcohol, giving it a full, rounded body that is unusual for a ginjo. The flavor is rich yet balanced, with notes of melon, pear, and rice, a savory umami depth, and a smooth, medium-dry finish at 15% ABV. It is superb chilled with sashimi and seafood, but also excellent at room temperature or gently warmed with richer food. This 720 ml bottle is one of the most beloved sakes in the U.S. market.
