Scapa Glansa is the smoky twist on Orkney’s quieter distillery, founded in 1885 on the shore of Scapa Flow, just across the water from its famous neighbor Highland Park. Owned by Chivas Brothers and run by a tiny team, Scapa makes an unpeated, honeyed island malt in a rare Lomond still, and Glansa, from the Old Norse for “stormy skies,” gives it a finishing period in casks that previously held peated whisky.
Bottled at 80 proof, it keeps Scapa’s delicate, scented floral character with fresh pear, sweet pineapple and a citrus tang on the nose, then a smooth, sweet palate of ripe honeydew melon, bursts of fruity pear and lemon sherbet, with a gentle wisp of smoke drifting in from the peated casks on the finish. Presented in a striking bottle with an Orkney map on the label, it is an approachable, fruit-forward island malt and a gentle introduction to smoke.
