Suntory Roku Gin is the Japanese craft gin from the House of Suntory, whose founder Shinjiro Torii launched Japan’s first gin, Hermes, in 1936. Roku means six, for the six Japanese botanicals harvested at their seasonal peak: sakura flower, sakura leaf, yuzu peel, sencha tea, gyokuro tea and sansho pepper, each distilled separately in the still best suited to it, then blended with eight traditional gin botanicals. It is bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof) in a hexagonal bottle.
Drinkhacker rated it an A-, describing fragrant citrus and white pepper on the nose with restrained juniper, then floral complexity with hints of coconut, brown butter and sage on the palate and an evergreen, citrus-peel finish, and called it “a highly versatile gin that’s just unique enough to come across as something special” while keeping a toe-hold in tradition. Suntory’s signature serve is a G&T with slivers of fresh ginger. Superb value in Japanese gin.
