Templeton Rye 4 Year Whiskey is the flagship from Templeton, the Iowa brand built on the legend of the Prohibition-era rye that made the small town of Templeton famous, and reportedly a favorite of Al Capone. Today’s Templeton is an entirely legal straight rye made from the classic 95% rye and 5% malted barley mash bill, aged four years and bottled at 80 proof, and since 2020 it is made without any added flavoring.
At 80 proof it is one of the softest ryes on the shelf, which is the point: The Whiskey Wash described rye spice with sugary sweetness reminiscent of cinnamon candy and pecan pie on the nose, and mint and honey on a light, approachable palate, positioning it for drinkers who want rye flavor without heat. That makes it a good beginner’s rye and an easy mixer in a Whiskey Ginger, a Rye and Coke or a lighter Old Fashioned. Templeton opened its own distillery in Templeton, Iowa in 2018 and has been transitioning to its own Iowa-distilled rye.
