Our Tasting Notes
The nose is incredibly refined, perfume-like, and inviting, opening with rich aromas of ripe peaches, white grapes, and a delicate touch of nutty dryness, which gradually make way for underlying notes of floral honey, soft vanilla, and warm spice. On the palate, the 40% ABV delivers a beautifully silk-like, gentle, and coating texture that slides effortlessly across the tongue. Exquisite flavours of creamy toffee, dried apricots, and sweet raisins dominate the entry, perfectly intertwined with complex layers of red fruits, toasted hazelnuts, and a sophisticated, wine-like fruitiness derived from the Port casks. The finish is remarkably long, warm, and elegant, concluding with lingering notes of soft baking spices, gentle oak tannins, and a final, honeyed fruit fade.
The Malt Master
The creation of the PortWood profile is the definitive legacy of David C. Stewart MBE, The Balvenie’s legendary former Malt Master who spent over six decades refining his craft. David pioneered the revolutionary technique of “cask finishing” in the 1980s, and the 21 Year Old PortWood is regarded as his ultimate masterpiece. The production team continues his meticulous method of sampling the whisky at regular intervals throughout the finishing process. This ensures that the deep fruit and wine characteristics of the Port pipes elevate and enhance the distillery’s signature honeyed character without ever dominating the delicate subtleties of the well-aged base spirit.
