The Balvenie, a name synonymous with craftsmanship and tradition, is a Speyside distillery that has captured the hearts of whisky enthusiasts worldwide. Nestled in the heart of Dufftown, Scotland, this distillery is a testament to the enduring spirit of Scottish whisky-making. What sets The Balvenie apart is its unwavering commitment to the five traditional crafts of whisky making: malting barley, copper-smithing, coopering, distilling, and maturation. By controlling every step of the process, The Balvenie ensures that each dram is a masterpiece, imbued with the essence of time and place.
Among the distillery’s exceptional range, The Balvenie: The Creation of a Classic is a true pioneer. This expression represents a pivotal moment in the history of whisky-making, as it marked the birth of the world’s first cask-finished single malt Scotch whisky. Back in the 1970s, David C. Stewart MBE, The Balvenie’s Malt Master, embarked on a bold experiment. He envisioned a whisky that would transcend the traditional boundaries of single malt, a spirit that would push the boundaries of flavour and complexity. To achieve this, he introduced the revolutionary concept of cask finishing, a technique that involves transferring mature whisky from one cask to another for a final period of maturation.
For The Creation of a Classic, Stewart selected a carefully chosen combination of casks: American Oak followed by sweet Oloroso sherry butts. The American Oak casks imparted a delicate balance of vanilla sweetness and subtle spice, while the Oloroso sherry butts added layers of rich, dried fruit, spice, and a touch of tannin. The result is a whisky that is both familiar and extraordinary, a testament to Stewart’s innovative spirit and the enduring legacy of The Balvenie. Bottled at 43% alc/vol.
