The Gladstone Axe American Oak is a Blended Malt Scotch Whisky crafted with whiskies from 14 different Highland and Islay distilleries. A key characteristic of this expression is its maturation exclusively in American oak ex-bourbon barrels, which imparts mellow sweet notes to the blend. The brand is named after William Gladstone, a four-time UK Prime Minister in the 1800s who also enjoyed felling trees, hence the “axe” imagery. The whisky is bottled at 43% ABV.

Tasting Notes: Expect a smooth and rich character with the following notes:

  • Nose: Sweet biscuity malt and soft, drying oak, with caramel and vanilla. Some detect malty biscuits, soft oak spice, caramel, vanilla, and hints of Malt Loaf with sultanas and dried fruits, spiced with nutmeg and allspice, and a suggestion of apple dumpling or spiced apple pie.
  • Palate: Poached apples, barley sugars, and custard cream biscuits. Some find an unusually smooth, mouth-filling texture and a well-balanced taste, with a return of the apple pie, now like tarte tatin. Hints of honey and vanilla can also be present.
  • Finish: Sweet toasted oak with wafts of honey and vanilla and a gentle peppery finish. Some describe it as drying overall, with the sweet elements fading to reveal a pinch of baking spice and fresh oak, giving a crisp dryness at the end.

Awards: The Gladstone Axe American Oak has received recognition, including:

  • Platinum at the SIP Awards in 2023.
  • Silver at the European Spirits Challenge in 2023.
  • Grand Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2023.
  • Gold at the ISW Meininger’s International Spirits Award in 2021.

Overall Impression: The Gladstone Axe American Oak is generally considered an approachable and easy-drinking blended malt Scotch. The exclusive maturation in ex-bourbon American oak casks contributes a noticeable sweetness with vanilla and caramel notes, complementing the underlying malty character. It’s often recommended for those who enjoy a smooth and slightly sweet Scotch with a touch of oak influence.
