  • Producer note:Vincent Mongeard told me that he began the harvest on ‘August 25th and welost fully 40% of the crop. Only in En Orveaux did we bring in a normalquantity. Sugars were certainly high with an average of 13.5% but some wineshit 14%. But, and I’m proud of it, with respect to the acidities, I touchednothing for I strongly believe that the character of the vintage has to be allowedto speak. What’s the point of having vintages if everyone tries to make themthe same? And if you go down that road, why have appellations? We might as welldump everything into one big fermenter and call it Bourgogne Rouge. I vinifiedlightly as I wasn’t interested in making Châteauneuf du Pape, which we easilycould have. I did my usual cuvaison period but shortened the initial maceratingtime. I also racked after the malos finished in June as I was concerned aboutletting the wine sit for too long on very ripe lees.’ The Mongeard winesare on the oaky side yet with time in bottle they generally absorb most of itand become quite satisfying. And they have an uncanny ability to age well too.In short, this is a solid if occasionally inconsistent source and one thatprovides reasonably good value as well.

Tasting note: This is verygenerously oaked yet the density of the fruit and the concentration of thekirsch-infused flavors are such that the majority of the wood should beabsorbed. There is plenty of spice on the nose followed by powerful, opulent, lush and extremely serious flavors that possess real size, weight and length, all wrapped in a dusty, slightly austere finish.
