The Balvenie 12 Year 100% Home Malted Barley Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700mL) — The 1931 Collection | Limited Edition 2026 Release

Discover one of The Balvenie’s most fascinating modern releases with The Balvenie 12 Year 100% Home Malted Barley Single Malt Scotch Whisky, a limited-edition expression from The Balvenie 1931 Collection created to celebrate one of the distillery’s rarest surviving traditional crafts: floor malting its own barley by hand.

While most modern Scotch distilleries source malted barley from large commercial maltsters, The Balvenie remains one of only a handful of Scottish distilleries that continues to operate its own traditional floor maltings. This remarkable 12 Year Old takes that commitment even further—it is produced from 100% home-malted barley, combining barley grown at The Mains of Balvenie farm with barley sourced from partner farms and malted using The Balvenie’s traditional process.

After distillation in Speyside, the whisky is initially matured in American oak before receiving a finish in ex-Sherry Bodega European oak butts from Jerez, Spain. The combination allows the cereal-rich character of Balvenie’s home-malted barley to remain at the center of the whisky while adding layers of dried fruit, creamy toffee, ginger, spice, and Sherry richness.

Bottled at a substantial 47.5% ABV (95 Proof), this release offers significantly more intensity than many of The Balvenie’s familiar core expressions, delivering a wonderfully textured combination of honeyed malt, warm biscuit, barley sugar, crystallized ginger, raisins, and aromatic oak.

How to Enjoy

The 1931 Collection 12 Year is particularly rewarding when tasted slowly, allowing its unusual home-malted character to fully develop:

  • Sip neat from a Glencairn or tulip-shaped whisky glass
  • Allow 10–15 minutes for the whisky to open before tasting
  • Pay particular attention to the cereal and biscuit aromas created by the home-malted barley
  • Add several drops of water to reveal additional honey and fruit
  • Enjoy at room temperature to preserve its delicate malt character
  • Pair with Scottish shortbread or oat biscuits
  • Excellent alongside roasted almonds or other toasted nuts
  • Pair with aged Comté or Gruyère
  • Smoked salmon complements the whisky’s malt and oak character
  • Sticky toffee pudding beautifully echoes its honey and toffee sweetness
  • An excellent bottle to taste alongside Balvenie DoubleWood 12 to explore two very different interpretations of 12-year-old Balvenie
